I planted some small fruit trees last fall and a couple are trying to bear fruit already.

1. A pear tree that surprised me with 5 pears growing already. it’s so small though i think the pears are going to break the branches they’re on. should i go ahead and pull them off? maybe let it get a little bigger and see what happens next year?

2 A peach tree which also has fruit, maybe about 10-11. in this case though, they’re about the size of big marbles and haven’t gotten any bigger for maybe a month or so. no worry about branch breaking this time (unless they take off and start growing later or something). i’m just wondering why they seem to have stopped getting bigger. maybe the tree is too new and the root system can’t support the fruit growth yet?

3 I also just planted a cherry tree maybe a month ago, but i think it’s gonna die. i’ve planted trees in both spring and fall and done ok up until this. i don’t know why the cherry tree is dying. the only connection i can guess is we had two huge rains two days in a row and right after that it just started wilting and now the leaves are turning brown. i may try again if the big box stores get cherry trees again in the fall. i’m just wondering if there’s something different cherry trees need done to them.

The solutions for problem.

1. I’m not familiar with peach or cheery trees. But I my grandmother used to have a pear tree. If the pears look big enough, I would definitely pull them off. The pear tree will get bigger year by year. Pear trees are great to have. As far as the other ones, I wouldn’t worry too much about them.

2. I have several peach trees. They all did the same thing as your when they were immature. It didn’t stunt their growth or hurt them in any way. As for cherries and pears, I would definitely pull the pears off. It’s too young, from the sound of it, to be bearing fruit that large. It will definitely break its branches. One of my peach trees split in half this year with all the weight on it. Very sad.

3.With that Cheery tree I would just keep an eye on it and make sure it’s still got green under the bark from time to time by barely scratching the bark off. If and when you are sure it’s not going to make it, prune it back to about 2-3 inches above the graft. Lots of times this will allow the roots to not have to work so hard to feed the tree. Of course suckers will start popping out but you just need to prune those back and keep the ones you want to get the desired growth (up for now). Good luck

Conclusion

I pulled a couple of the pears off the pear tree and let three that seemed to be in sturdier spots grow. they got pretty big, but just this week they disappeared. they’re not on the ground around the tree so i guess some kid or animal (will a racoon take them?) pulled them off. there was another smaller pear tree that had one smaller and not as good looking pear on it that’s gone also.

same with the peaches. they got a little bigger and some disappeared also, but i saw a couple around the base of the tree. not sure what happened there because they were nowhere near being ripe enough to eat.

the cherry tree as far as i can tell is dead. it wilted more and more and now is just a stick in the ground with some dead leaves on it. still don’t know why, but like i stated before, i may try again this fall if i can get one or two more.

The problem is : I have an old farm house that has been sitting a few years and has a plastic shower stall. It is in good condition except for brown stains that seem embedded. I’ve tried the basic 409, Comet Spray, and the Mr. Clean pads, but nothing works well. Will anything get it white and clean again?

The solution is

1. not sure if you’re still having this issue but I was thinking … I wonder if you coated the bottom of it with a paste of baking soda and water, and then sprayed it with vinegar – the vinegar would cause the baking soda to foam up, if you let that sit a while maybe it would loosen up the embedded dirt and grime to allow you to get it clean? Just a thought!

2. yes it is nice advice you have given…along with vinegar you can also use it with petrol…

3. Hello you can try this. It may help you..Clean mineral deposits from a shower head by removing the head, taking it apart, and soaking it in vinegar. Then brush deposits loose with an old toothbrush. Clean the holes by poking them with a wire, pin, toothpick, or ice pick.

Home improvements are an excellent way to beautify your home. Not only this, but they can really increase its value.

Here are 5 tips for anyone planning a home improvement project.

Update your kitchen. When planning an improvement, keep an eye on the future. Homes with the most up-to-date furnishings tend to sell faster than ones that don’t, all other things equal. Dark, out-dated kitchens, in particular, make it hard to sell a home. If you aren’t sure which area of your home to focus on, give serious consideration to your kitchen.

Update your bathroom. Aside from kitchens, remodeled and updated kitchens rank high on the list of the most profitable ways you can improve your home. Replacing old, cabinetry and aged sink basins is an excellent way to inject new life into an old bathroom. If you can afford it, replacing vinyl tiling with ceramic or stone is definitely worth it. If you just don’t have a lot of money, consider various hardware replacements, such as new drawer and cabinet door handles, new faucets, etc. You don’t necessarily need to spend a lot of money to create a significant visual change.

New additions. Adding a new room to your house is an excellent way to increase its value. Dens and family rooms, for example, offer added space in which to read, socialize or watch television. Plus, if you have a small home, the extra livable square footage will help when it comes time to sell.

Longevity of materials. It can be hard to know what type of material makes the most sense. If it always seems to be a tradeoff between price and longevity, that’s because it is. Here is a rough guide as to how long you can expect certain materials to last.

New roof shingles (asphalt): Minimum of 15 years. As much as 30 years.

Wooden deck: Most will last up to 15 years, possibly more if properly sealed and maintained.

Ceramic tile: If ceramic is treated properly, there’s no reason it can’t last up to 100 years or more.

Vinyl: Vinyl is not the most aesthetically appealing choice, but it can last from 10 to 20 years.

Wood flooring: Properly care for, wood flooring can last 50 to 100 years.

Longevity of appliances. When replacing appliances, it’s always a good idea to bite the bullet and go for quality over economy when possible. Buying a cheap appliance might seem like a good solution at the time, but you can wind of spending as much or more replacing or repairing cheap appliances compared to the cost of having simply bough a quality appliance from the start.

If you move or go through a change in life and do not know what they do with all of your illness, self storage can be an attractive option. Many storage companies offer heavily discounted rates for the first month – we’re talking about a single dollar homes for 30 days from your trash. At this price, is what the hook?

The problem is that after packing, transporting and storing their possessions in a facility, most people tend to leave them there for months or even years at a time, resulting in a bill that runs into the thousands. Though there are some cases where self-storage makes sense, for most people a far cheaper and more effective option is to take a look at everything you own, decide what can be thrown away, and find smart ways to store the rest. Here are some strategies for tackling the often daunting process.

To store or not to store

“I take a very dim view of the self-storage industry,” says Sharon Lowenheim, the owner of New York-based Organizing Goddess, Inc. “It’s kind of sad that people are willing to pay for the privilege of holding onto their possessions but never actually seeing them.” Lowenheim believes there are only a few scenarios in which storage would be a good option, including college students who need to leave their dorms for the summer, those whose residences are undergoing renovation, and people who are showing their homes to potential buyers. In those situations, storing large items such as furniture may be cost effective. If this is you, calculate the price of storage over the projected period – plus the money you’ll spend on transportation – and compare it with the cost of replacing your items. If it works out cheaper or around the same to buy new furniture, skip self-storage.

Tackling the clutter

Saying no to storage means having to address your clutter — a task that can feel overwhelming. Nancy Heller, a professional organizer at Goodbye Clutter, specializes in coaching people through the process of letting treasured possessions go. Often, her clients are emotionally invested in items that have little inherent value but carry huge emotional meaning. A sentimental person herself, Heller recommends keeping a few key items that are associated with good memories, and letting the rest go. One of her strategies for pack rats is to take a large box and fill it with all the nostalgic things the client wants to keep. When the box becomes overstuffed and the person realizes how much room it’s taking up, the client is more inclined to part ways with their possessions.

Lowenheim offers a few more tips for dealing with clutter:

- Ask yourself what contribution each item is making to your life right now — not ten years ago, and not in an imagined future. If the answer is “not much,” the trash can awaits.

- Collectors may find it difficult to let go of things after spending a long time accumulating an entire set of items. But if you have ten of something, isn’t it more valuable to display three and get rid of the other seven, instead of shoving the whole lot in a drawer? Line up the collection and choose a few favorites. The rest can go.

- For those things you can’t bear to part with, consider displaying them in a more compact form. A common space hog is t-shirts — instead of keeping them all in a drawer, you could turn them into a quilt. (Or pay a company to do it for you.) Take photos of large items and keep the pictures instead of the objects.

- Envision where your items will go when you when they leave your home. Visualizing someone else making use of your long-neglected possessions may make it easier to bid them goodbye.

Selling your stuff

When you’ve moved everything you no longer need into a giant pile in the middle of your living room, thoughts of eBay and Craigslist may dance in your head. But don’t get your hopes up. “People have an inflated opinion of how much their things are worth,” says Lowenheim. Second-hand items are difficult to unload at anything close to their original price. Of course, there are a few exceptions. Products in excellent condition made recently by big brand names may fetch a few dollars. Lowenheim cites American Girl dolls and Nintendo gaming consoles as examples, but advises checking eBay to get an idea of what people are paying. Otherwise, the best option is to donate to a local charity and score a tax deduction for your trouble.

Making more room

Once you’ve gotten rid of your old stuff, find ways of optimizing the storage space in your newly sparse home. Combined with ruthless decision-making, this will prevent the clutter from creeping back in. Here are a few ways to make more room:

- Think vertically. Heller suggests shelves around the perimeter of wall, hooks on the backs of doors, and boxes under the bed. You could also add a hutch above your desk. And make every bookcase a tall one.

- Choose furniture with built-in storage. Ottomans, love seats and beds with compartments are all good options.

- Keep surfaces clear. No, really – make it a policy. Once there are a few stray papers on a desk, something cosmic happens and a giant mound of junk suddenly appears.

Legendary personal organizer Barbara Hemphill has a great quote: “Clutter is postponed decisions.” Be decisive about the things that end up in your home and you’ll eliminate the need for self-storage, saving a ton of money and time.
